The alternative for the hatchery is a disposal cost. The magnitude of
which will depend very much on the sensibilities of the state /
country etc. Some places allow easier / cheaper wholesale waste
disposal than others, depending on many tihngs - ... awareness ...
That was my point, that we're not made aware of such things.

That applies to all our food production, not just the poultry
industry. There is a LOT of cruelty - in the name of cheap food. I
believe that the last thing we should economise on is food and that
our 'cheap' food is at the expense of cruelty to animals but that's
another argument which we've had here and there's no point in
repeating it.

What is the shame is that you are in a minority.
There is plenty of information out there.
But, as Amy commented, the majority of the population don't want to know

Its like the battery egg conundrum
[these figures are a bit out of date but still valid]
85% of the population wanted battery production to stop
75% of the population bought battery eggs [identifiable as not being produced free range or barn etc]
I am aware that there are more free range eggs produced now but demand is bottoming out and its far from the majority of eggs produced.

All around the world farmers are being relegated to less and less valued members of the social community
Yet they are vilified at every turn

I know I am preaching to the converted with you, Mary - but, until you can start persuading more folks in the cities to think like you, things will get alot worse.

Another thing I learned today, is that the EU is banning battery egg production, with effect from 2012. The result (anticipated) will be the closing down of a lot of egg farms, and a shortage of eggs, as well as a general increase in price. This, apparently, has created a business opportunity in the non-EU countries - they are starting egg farming, so that when that time comes they will be able to export the eggs.

Wonder how this will affect us? In South Africa, I mean.
