Re: Another one down.

I may be wrong, it's been a while since I've had chicks, but if I remember
correctly regular layer has about 16% protein and chick starter has
something like 21% protein. The babies need a lot of protein, they are
growing bones and bodies and feathers. My numbers are US so they may be
different in your country.

Please try to get some chick starter, esp. medicated if you can, so your
little ones can grow properly. Best of luck!

Another chick died yesterday.
One was also slightly weaker than the other remaining two, so I brought
it indoors for the afternoon. I put it back with the mother in the
evening, and this morning it seems fine. Still a little weaker than its
siblings, but quite perky. It's also cooler this morning, so that might
help. The temperatures have been very high the last few days, and each
time I've found a chick ailing, it's been stranded in the middle of the
lawn in the sun.

Hold thumbs for the last 3.

If I were you, I'd start them on medicated chick feed.

Now.

I did consider the feed. Where I live I cannot get medicated chick feed -
maybe if I go to one of the larger centres, but that will be too late.
What I've done is stop feeding them the mash that I was using. I've taken
the normal chicken mix, and put it into the coffee grinder, and ground it
finer, and that's what they've been eating this last day.

I've also been chasing them back into the shade when I see them wandering,
and put the chicks INTO the water dish every time I refresh it, which is
every couple of hours. The water dish is very shallow, don't worry, and
it's only if they're lethargic and easily picked up that I do that.

There are still three, and they seem to be fine. The one is starting to
get little streaky black feathers on its wings. lol The other have white
feathers. Presumable the white ones will be hens, and the blackish one a
male. The second chick that died had the black feathers growing.
