many things in s.e. asia wouldn't be acceptable here, & animal
husbandry methods are but a part of that. it doesn't mean that s.e.
asia is a living example of why people shouldn't have backyard
chooks.
The response was to the suggestions that "EVERYONE" should have them so as to negate the requirement for intenisve units
Very different from people choosing to enjoy having birds in their gardens or smallholdings etc. These are the ones who, as you rightly say, will bring to the table some clue as to what they are letting themsevles in for and inform themselves
I cringe at the thought that "everyone" should keep hens in their back yard. Some people should never own pets or food producing animals, much less have kids to raise. No-one is good at everything and some people are not good with livestock, neither the humble hen or the cow. Regardless of the flak we farmers may get, running a successful livestock business does involve looking after your animals. A dead animal is a dead loss. So it makes good economic sense to keep our animals in as healthy a state as we can.
The complaint against intensive livestock rearing of any type is it's not good for the animal. If an animal has ample food, water and weather protection in easy reach they are content and a content animal is going to be the most productive any day. Animal behaviour is about immediate needs, not long term wants like humans.
