Hmmm- prefer means "To choose or be in the habit of choosing as more
desirable or as having more value"
How is a chicken able to evaluate the cost / benefits of any
activity?

My chickens demonstrate every day that they prefer the bit of scratch
I throw in their pen to the continued opportunity to eat fresh grass,
scratch in the dirt, and pick up whatever bugs are on offer. Just
_how_ they make that determination and whether or not that is a
_valid_ determination is kind of irrelevant. It is obvious some sort
of determination is made.

But it has less value to their well being ;)

but the chook doesn't operate that way. she thinks (yes, she does!) "yum - i'm going to eat that". after she's eaten it, she has indulged her preference. and that's the limits to a chook's well being - she did what she wanted to do when there were two or more available options.

any loss of egg potential due to chooks choosing one form of food over a "better" one is a dent to OUR well being, not hers :-) at the end of the day she's still alive with a full tummy & doesn't give a whit about what _we_ might have gained or lost. if her life is 6 months or a year or three years shorter because of what she chose to eat or do isn't a dent on HER well being, only ours. she lives in the moment - that's her well being.

You say it so well, I'm quite envious. Of you and the chooks!

No fretting about what this particular food means in terms of cholesterol and the latest research that indicates that this is or isn't more likely to lead to x, y and z diseases in a,b, or c years..... and what about the sugar content, and salt, and preservatives, are they really as bad as the last magazine article......
