I think one of my hens has lice, they are around the vent area. The critters are visable and a orange/brown color ,fast moving and look like the shape of ear wigs but obviously loads smaller .I have got Gold label lice/flee/mite and general critter powder.I gave my two hens there first dusting today. When should they be clear, this may be the reason why one of the hens comb is floppy and paler?
thanks keith
Find a vet in your area - worth travelling a few miles - who deals with cattle. There is a spot on "get rid of any insects and worms anywhere in/on the body" that can also be used for chickens. It used to be called Ivermectin, but I think the name has changed now.
It is not licensed for chickens, but I had great success with it. No worms, no fleas/lice, no scaly leg. You do need a vet that knows the dosage for chickens and is prepared to let you have it though.
A few drops on the neck skin is all you need.
Scaly leg and other parasites, internal and external, in poultry
Dosage 0.1 ml / kg
Examples of weight:
Polish hen 1.5 kg
Medium breed 2 – 3 kg
Heavy breed, e.g. Orpington 4 – 5 kg
Withholding period 7 days before using eggs or meat for human consumption. Eggs can be safely fed to dogs.
How to administer: Suck up required amount for one bird into syringe. DO NOT use a needle to administer the liquid. Squirt the liquid onto the skin on the neck of the fowl up above the shoulders, where she cannot reach it when grooming herself. It is easiest to do this at night when the birds are roosting in their house. A headband-light is good since it leaves your hands free.
