We're in the process of buying another house a bit farther north than
where we currently live. We were looking around at the place (about
12 acres, good pasture, beautiful pecan trees,

Oh joy!

... I don't need
snakes. They have no arms or legs! They should not be able to move!
<shudder!>

LOL! On another group a big strong man is terrified of spiders - BECAUSE
they have legs!

The main reasons I wanted to be sure that snakes couldn't get into my
coop were A) I'd have a heart attack and die if I ran across one; B) I
don't want one getting in there and biting the kids (we have
rattlesnakes, copperheads, coral snakes and water moccasins in our
area), C) the chickens were only the size of large quail when we put
them out there, and snakes definitely eat quail, and D) snakes LOVE to
eat eggs.

If we had the snakes you have I'd be very careful about my poultry too. I've
never seen a snake in the wild in this country (England) although I know
there are some. I don't think I'd be frightened, more curious, but in your
situation I might be different. Don't think they'd cause a heart attack
though - after all, you did survive the one you spotted!
