SCIENTISTS at the Roslin Institute are to breed chickens that produce less
excrement, it was reported today.
The £700,000 project will focus on adapting chickens' genes in a bid to cut
down on the damage caused by harmful chemicals in the bird's droppings.
The droppings contain nitrogen and phosphorus which help weeds flourish and
causes other pollutants.
It is hoped the work will also lead to a reduction in the smell of chicken
droppings.
A spokesman for Roslin - which is fame for creating Dolly the sheep, the
world's first cloned mammal - said: "Nitrogen and phosphorus are an
important source of pollution in the terrestrial and aquatic environment.
"Reducing excretion would reduce the pollution and enhance the immediate
environment for farm personnel and have aesthetic benefits in poultry
facilities."
