i don't really know if that is their motivation, but their claim that
nitrogen and phosphorus are pollutants, and it's that which makes
this sort of "research" a good thing, has got to be the most
disingenuous thing i've read all week!!!

In a place that is as small as this island nitrogen pollution is a VERY
SERIOUS ecological pollutant.

If any of you in any other land mass consider yourselves too big or too
"whatever" to be unaffected - you are just TOO arrogant.

I think you're reading too much into this. I'm sure no one meant to
belittle the size of your landmass.

Nitrogen and other similar agricultural high dose pollutants are something
you should learn about from those who have already seen the effects

If all anyone all can ever think about is the piddling little bit their
half a dozen chooks produce its now wonder that the environment around
them is being destroyed. Then everyone all blames the ag-businesses for
doing what is required by the populace -- cheap food and lowest cost and
unrealistic fluffybunny ideas about how they achieve it.

I don't think that anyone who is raising their own chickens really qualifies
as part of "the populace" that requires cheap food. Raising your own
chicken is usually not the most cost-effective way to get it. I think most
of us who do would rather that the rest of the people around us valued
quality over quantity and cost, but we can only change what we can
chance--our own behavior and the few people we can directly influence.

I think it's fair to say that most people who have not made the decision
either to become vegetarian or raise or find locally grown/pastured meat
either honestly don't realize the far-reaching implications of their actions
or prefer not to think about it. But I think the tide is turning. There
are more and more people who ARE making those kinds of decisions. To throw
up your hands and just condemn everyone isn't productive.

Something I posted elsewhere - but is more pertinent here
July 10 2007
54,000 turkeys being destroyed in Shenandoah County in Virginia after
discovery of low path H5N1 during pre slaughter testing.
Last full blown Aivan flu outbreak in the same area was 2002 when almost 5
million birds were destroyed
Nearby Rockingham county is possibly the largest area of US poultry
production

And this is exactly why keeping huge masses of one variety of birds in one
place is completely insane.

and in the news for the area:-
July 11 2007
Massive fish kills in Shenandoah River are being investigated and two
university professors have recommended a focus on litter from the
poultry industry as a possibly cause. Poultry litter is either processed
or applied directly to fields and is used extensively throughout the area
supplied by the 900 poultry farms in Shenandoah valley.

It sounds like they're applying it more to get rid of it than to make
legitimate use of it. Overapplication of chemical fertilizers along the
Mississippi river is killing our seafood industry in the gulf.

Within the last week there were over 50,000 birds killed in one heat
stroke situation

Again, this is one reason why most people here are opposed to the commercial
systems you're such an apologist for.

Do you really think that the output of hundreds of thousands of birds is
FINE

I think that people who think eating corpses is a great thing to do should
consume far less of them.
