i don't really know if that is their motivation, but their claim
that nitrogen and phosphorus are pollutants, and it's that which
makes this sort of "research" a good thing, has got to be the most
disingenuous thing i've read all week!!!

In a place that is as small as this island nitrogen pollution is a
VERY SERIOUS ecological pollutant.

firstly, nobody is talking about your island specifically. if that's
all right.

Correct.
Nitrogen/ phosphorus pollution from large scale agricultural production,
like poultry farming, is a serious problem the world over.
In locations where the land mass / population / farming gets a bit tight the
controls are more noticeable if we are not to harm our ecological balance
further. Here we have Nitrate Vulnerable Zones in place where the amount of
nitrogen is being increasingly controlled. There are similar schemes
elsewhere in the world. Poultry farming is a very large producer of nitrogen
and its growing.
Hence the inspiration for the research.
