i don't really know if that is their motivation, but their claim
that nitrogen and phosphorus are pollutants, and it's that which
makes this sort of "research" a good thing, has got to be the most
disingenuous thing i've read all week!!!
In a place that is as small as this island nitrogen pollution is a
VERY SERIOUS ecological pollutant.
If any of you in any other land mass consider yourselves too big or
too "whatever" to be unaffected - you are just TOO arrogant.
I think you're reading too much into this. I'm sure no one meant to
belittle the size of your landmass.
<g>
It was not the size of the landmass that I felt was being belittled but
the scale of the nitrogen pollution problem.
When the land mass is smaller relative to the population is simply focuses
the mind.
Kylie's intimation that N and P are not pollutants is simply false, but
seems to be common in places where space is not at a premium and
ecological complacency is the norm.
despite qualifying that statement carefully i note you didn't take that on
board.
n & p are not pollutants _per se_. they are minerals which aid our survival.
if you want to avoid problems with them, then yes - soluble chemical
fertilisers are going to have to go, and monoculture should go along with it
for a great many reasons.
in the wrong form or the wrong place, ANYTHING can be a pollutant. you may
have noticed that two of the building blocks of our existence, oxygen and
carbon, are creating a rather spectacular pollution problem. yet similarly
that does not make oxygen & carbon "pollutants" _per se_. i remain as fond
of oxygen & carbon as i do of nitrogen and phosphorus & all the others.
therefore, if some researcher wants to baldly declare that n & p are
pollutants, i should be looking for his agenda, because without them he
wouldn't even BE here to make such silly statements.
