My chickens are like yours in that they only get out for part of the
day, but I find that once the plants are past a certain height the
chickens don't bother them, but concentrate on the bugs and weeds
beneath.

Yebbut some plant roots don't like being disturbed ... my asparagus bed
has a more permanent fence round it! Saladings MUST be protected and, as
I discovered the other week, the hens will eat ALL carrot tops :-(

My asparagus gets ignored by the chickens. Probably because it is
liberally interspersed with weeds :). My biggest problem is goats eating
the strawberries.

HAHA!

We don't have goats.

Or strawberries. Well, two this year, well out of reach of hens or goats.
I've been assured that in their second year they'll fruit abundantly!

But the hens chewed the first precious asparagus spears so they were
BANISHED!

The goats eat both the berries and the plants, so unless they put in a
recovery over the winter, we probably won't have many next year either. But
my goats are pets, so I'd rather let them run around and help me with the
yard work than keep them in the pasture all the time.
