Re: Eglu pros and cons

You can get a decent hut and run second hand for not much more price
than an Eglu. Unless you have a really small garden where nothing
else will fit. Myself I would not consider putting my birds in such
a small plastic hut if they have room to free range, If you have a
acre I would give them a shed, not an Eglu.

It's nice to have a henhouse you can stand up in.

It is but its a lot of unnecessary expensive timber.
Good quality timber is getting more and more expensive again.
For less than 20 hens its really a waste of money to have a person sized
house. Either that or you get a cheap garden shed which you have to replace
every couple of years. Which is a false economy.

Mine is a bit low,
I have to crouch a little when I go in to collect the eggs,

A properly designed external nestbox sorts that problem out -- but then
there are few that are well designed. Its one of my biggest bug bears with
so many designs.

and when
it comes to cleaning out the deep litter it's quite tiring working
bent over.

If the job is done regularly enough then its not something that should take
that long to tire you out. Granted our lines of 12 houses can get a bit
tiring in the middle of the winter but one or two should not unless the
litter is allowed to get into a horrid state.

Anyway when it's bad weather there's something really
nice about being able to go and hang out with your chooks and discuss
the issues of the day.

<grin>
Mind you - they would also prefer a bigger sheltered out door area where you
all can commune
Doubles up as a bird flu protection area.
