My 7 (6? the flock seems to be down to 6 but I
think I've seen 7 still the morning) has some
bloodied white leghorn roosters. They survive
snow and cold just fine but seem intent on killing
each other off.
(Flock dropped off at night a couple of months
ago, by somebody who didn't need more roosters, I
guess. They've been roosting in a Maple at night
and hanging around mostly my backyard.)
There's no hens to provoke this as far as I know.
The instinct to flock seems to be at odds with the
instinct to fight.
Their combs are very suspectible to any damage by the cold and each other.
Any damage to the combs will shed a lot of blood and they get covered in it.
Good food reduces their aggression.
Good shelter will protect their combs from the cold.
Any group of boys will have fights, the scale depends on their health and
conditions.
They look pretty healthy to me, except the one losing the battle
today of course. It's not comb damage.
Here are six from yesterday morning
