You clearly do not live in a remote location ;)
Geography causes issues that are not about care or "trouble".

Well I don't live in a city, but I am prepared to travel to remote
locations in order to source good stock. It's cost me a whole days
travelling and £80 worth of fuel in the past, just to collect a dozen
eggs or a trio.

We have done it before too but it takes us days - plural.
Rumblings has said s/he is in Scotland too which, in general, means the same
thing, unless living very close to the border.

If I had eggs sent by post I'd be doing it with my
eyes wide open and expectations would be low, but I don't consider it
an option. I'd rather speak with a breeder face to face and view the
stock.

I think both you and Rumblings are probably in the better educated arena of
poultry buyers. Many folks don't know the questions, let alone what the
answers they want. Many think that a 90% hatch rate should be expected at
all times of the year, from all birds, by whatever route, because that is
what a book says.

Many years ago, I would travel by train to pick up birds, it was quite
acceptable and common place 40 years ago, but now you'd have people
running and screaming bird flu if they saw you with a chicken in a
basket ;-)

Heck -- the trains used to deliver the blooming things !!!
Up here Red Star would carry birds up from the pullet rearers by the basket
load.
Even in our day we have had all sorts of animals delivered by rail.
If only we could even get day olds transported nationally, then we would get
more of the bigger breeders back again, and get more utility lines working.
