Generally speaking, mutations are what happens naturally all the time to a
fair proportion of offspring of all creatures (and plants), tiny
variations in the structure of a gene or a group of genes, mostly
unnoticed and of no consequence. Mutants are thus those individuals that
someone has noticed are different :-)

I may be new to google lists but I have been using yahoo
groups 8 of my years in poultry so I dont pull these things out of a
hat.But personally if you have a chicken that eats so much you have to
take the food away for half the time,it doesnt walk unless its for
more food or water,it doesnt get up to deficate, they dont perch, they
grow at such alarming rates they reach a point where their legs cant
even hold them up,wouldnt you consider it to be at the least strange?

Um... no! Seen too many dogs and cats purposely bred for show standards
that are w-a-y out of normality. Normality to me means ability to breathe
properly (unlike pekinese, Persians, British bulldogs) and give birth
unaided by a vet, to mention just 2 important factors. Unfortunately
extremes of show standards and in many cases breeding from too small a
gene pool by breeders with little integrity but enormous greed for money
and show ribbons.

I think that's a bit unfair. Most breeders who breed pet animals who are
this far from the norm aren't even going to be able to cover their costs. I
share your opinion that they're not doing the animals any favors by breeding
to such abnormal standards, but they have been taught to believe that
preservation of the breed and improvement in line with the Standard is worth
any personal sacrifice on their part and whatever discomfort it causes on
the animal's part.

It's like people who unaccountably believe a statue of a dead guy with blood
running down his face and side is somehow tasteful and appropriate ;-).
