Re: Wheat vs Mixed corn

I rarely use mixed corn unless my farm has run out of it's own bagged
wheat (25kg for £5) but to be honest you could hardly called it mixed corn
as there is so little maize in it.

The likes of DH and Spillers etc have A LOT of maize in.

I cut my layers pellets with a bit of wheat when my rare breeds are not
laying which is Sept-April now they are all getting so elderly. I know
you do not approve of this, Jill - we have discussed it before. It's not
done them any harm at all and most have lived to 10-13 yo.

As a maintenance diet its not so terrible.
For productive pure breeds, in their laying years, its bad.
There is different husbandry for different birds, at different times in
their lives.
I have seen the results of fatty liver and the fat inside birds on Post
mortem, I was less concerned until I was shown what was happening inside.
Its not just high octane birds. :)

When I went to the farm the other day to buy layers pellets I said to the
farmer "do you have anything called *non-layers pellets* that's a bit
cheaper?" ;-)

Allen and Page have an Ornamental feed

and they do a low protein free range food
http://www.smallholderfeed.co.uk/layers.htm

don't know anything about prices. ;)

I haven't seen an egg since September apart from a quick burst of 8 in a
fortnight from one of my Sicilians in November (aged 4, my youngest group
now)

Our girls are really strong this winter, even though we have lots of older
birds, they are SO enjoying the cold bright dry weather. The weather
patterns that have given you all snow down south is one of the few that
gives us some decent winter weather instead of our usual wind, rain, grey
and grotty.
We are just about to start holding regular producers markets here at the
farm, which will provide ready customers for the extra, they started last
autumn but we had a break for Jan and Feb. and have been busy with lots of
'jobs' around here before the season starts in earnest again.
