<big snip>

I haven't seen an egg since September apart from a quick burst of 8 in a
fortnight from one of my Sicilians in November (aged 4, my youngest group
now)

Gosh, poor you! I knew mine (all pure-breeds) wouldn't get into action
(or
back into action) until "after Christmas" and was stunned that the first
one
started on 28th December. They are all laying well now except the Jubilee
Orpington who likes to show off her rare breed status by laying a bit more
temperamentally! However, mine are all youngsters.

Oh, well when mine were youngsters I got an egg on Christmas Day! <boast>
However mine are all old ladies now, 4-10 and I'm not likely to get eggs
until end of March/April. I don't really mind.
I have passed their eggs around to keep the bloodlines going and when they
pass away naturally I will just get half a dozen rescue batteries for eggs
for the house.
It's far too expensive to keep rare breeds for me with the cost of food.
Wouldn't matter so much if I was up to wringing their necks when they became
unproductive. I've only done it twice when birds were suffering (and only
because my neighbour who usually did the biz was too drunk to do it both
times.)
It's not something I found easy so I prefer to let my old girls live out
their lives. Hey, I will be old myself one day!
