What
does is fitting them with a "beak bit" it's a plastic device that fits on their beak and it's rounded so if they peck an egg it will not break.
They are certainly worth a try.
But, again, there are examples of birds who get around them.

Mine never did. I can't say I like using them much though but it's pointless to feed chickens who eat their eggs unless you are fond of spending a lot of money on layers pellets for no return at all.

That sounds like me :-(
Broody one after the other, now moulting! Have had a couple of eggs eaten but it doesn't seem to be a steady thing and I think it may have been a weak-shelled egg that cracked each time. Despite oyster-shell grit there is a soft-shelled or weak shelled egg every once in a while, along with the occasional bonsai egg, those enchanting if unprofitable miniatures. The last one, I gave to someone who buys my eggs and loves them for their flavour. She was delighted and still has it. People who don't keep chooks don't know about the odd stories behind the shelves of mass-produced eggs in the supermarkets. When they do the whole chook welfare thing gets more important, people get so they feel connection with chooks because they're not just amorphous product-makers, they're as real and various as cats and dogs.

Thanks for alerting me to the existence of beak bits. It's good to have a few answers up one's jumper BEFORE a problem arises.
