[snip lots of good stuff]

"The 75,000-year-old beads were found in the Blombos Cave on the southern
tip of South Africa. A team led by Christopher Henshilwood of the
University of Bergen, Norway found over 40 pea-sized shells with bored
holes and worn areas showing that they had been strung on a necklace,
bracelet or clothes."
This is the kind of stuff that would remain behind and indicate use of
string. People do indicate that leather strips could also be used to
string beads so it would be the size of the holes that mattered. Then I
guess you would be able to argue which came first - thin but strong string
or thin but strong leather?
How would drilling holes be done 75,000 years ago?
