I can't explain the Japanese technology, since I haven't read the
paper. But any trout fisherman knows that salmon/trout hybrids often
occur and are locally abundant in some streams (for example an
Atlantic salmon/brown trout hybrid in northern European streams).
Trout and salmon are very closely related species and some belong to
the same genus (others have a different generic name, but they are
still closely related), and hybrids of various trout species are well
known where I fish (Yellowstone ecosystem). Mostly the hybridization
occurs between species that spawn at the same time (spring or,
