Eric,
If you give up before you start, you fulfill your own prophecy.
I'm a bit surprised that you don't think that there is always
at least a small possibility that a cause might be solvable.
I don't advocate beating one's head against a wall. However,
remaining inviting and willing to become engaged with those who
disagree with one is the best way I know of to eventually wind
up with a good outcome. Well, one can invade the other folks
with overwhelming military force; that works well, too. Look
how good things are in Iraq.
