If sapiens was originally a strandloper, erectus was originally a
strandduiker. H.ergaster-erectus c 1.8 Ma has been found from Algeria to
Java: no doubt they spread along the coasts - why wouldn't they have dived
(parttime) for seefood? Pachyostosis (thick bones as in erectus) is only
seen AFAWK in slow-diving mammals that feed on sessile prey (shellfish,
seaweeds): walruses, seacows, Odobenocetops, Kolponomos & some Thalassocnus
spp. We must have had diving ancestors: how else did we get the fine control
of the airway entrances which preadapted to speech?
