Nat Geo special - Modern Humans at 70 K

I saw a National Geographic special this week (the Ultimate survivor). In
it, it was stated there was a world wide event around 70,000 - possibly a
super volcano. This event eliminated most humans, leaving only 2,000 of the
smartest, in Africa. From there, well, the rest as they say....
Can anyone shed some light on the what and where this event was supposed to
occur? They said "bigger than Krakatoa," which made me think it was in
Indonesia. However, in one of their scenes they discussed a race descended
from Erectus that lived in Indonesia until long after the event, so
Indonesia does not seem a likely place for it. So I am mystified as to what
it could have been.
Thanks
.
