The currents that flow down the West coast
of North America come from the arctic and are
cold. Those that flow down the East coast of
Africa come from the tropics and are warm.
A species that evolved at low altitudes, not
far from the East African coast, would not
need fur to keep warm at night. Fur is, of
course, a major handicap when sleeping on
ground made wet by rain or condensation.
The prevailing winds in much of the area
are easterly, blowing in warm damp air from
the ocean, that cools to rain and
condensation.
