Next semester, I'll be teaching an introductory course
on human evolution, and I'm looking for a suitable textbook.
The course is intended as a general overview of our
evolutionary origins. The target audience is freshman
college students in general, not requiring any background in
biology or anthropology.
Topics in the course:
- What is a human?
- Perspectives on the past
- Humans and other animals - similarities and differences
- Evolutionary theory
- Our fossil history
- Evolution, behavior, and culture
- Biologically determined vs. socially constructed?
- Sex and gender in an evolutionary perspective
- The roots of culture
- Language, mind, and consciousness
- The frontiers of research on human origins
What main textbook would you recommend for such a course?
