If you can get a hold of Ancestors: In Search of Human Origins, Random,
1994
by Johanson, there's an entire chapter on scavenging and possible
volume available.
Johanson page 118: "There's no other way you could get so many calories
so fast out there."
Once our ancestors got the idea of bashing bones with stones for a
living, an entire niche opened up for the stealing. Leopards, cheetahs,
hyenas, vultures, and dogs can very easily be driven off kills
(Johanson 1994, O'Connell 2002). The only real threat would be lions
and they can be avoided.
