I'll add a couple of further comments on these papers. See
"Scientific American"
November and December, 2003 - The Unseen GEnome. Some of the
non-coding sections of the nuclear DNA are transcribed into RNA which
is used directly rather than coding for a protein molecule which the
cell uses. This means that these sections could affect survival and
be subject to selection. Whether that applies to the above article, I
don't know.
Let me give an example. Some of these sections, riboswitches, may
affect the synthesis of amino acids. Well, humans cannot synthesize 8
of the amino acids, and babies cannot synthesize histidine. These 8
are found in meat which implies, I would suppose, that humans have had
meat in their diets for a long time. But clearly this affects
survival when mankind switched to agriculture.
So - the question is, are there any non-coding genes in the
section of DNA studied in the two articles cited?
