The following factors are relevant:
(a) hominids are mammals -- with hot blood
designed for night activity;
(b) hominids are primates: mammals which
switched to day-time activity;
(c) hominids became terrestrial, and began
to sleep on the ground;
(d|) hominids compelled to sleep on cold
wet ground will suffer greatly, often to
the point of death -- especially in the
case of infants.

Gosh, Pauly, deep in some intellectual wrangle with
Dimmy? You must feel terribly stressed. ;-) When
was the last time you laid your pink little cheeks on
cold wet ground? This is a ridiculous argument.

I'm trying to talk about early hominids -- y'know
our ancestors long, long ago, long before you
were born: our great-great-great- (put in another
150,000 'great-'s) grand-fathers, and our great-
great-great (yes, you've got it, put in another
150,000 'great-'s here as well) grand-mothers.

Once upon a time, they used to sleep in trees.
But then, one day, they stopped doing that,
and they started sleeping on the ground.
They did not have houses then, little Mikey.

Now, now, don't close your eyes and go to sleep
yet. I've not finished telling you the story.

Where did they sleep, do you think? Remember
that sometimes it rained. And this was in the
tropics, so sometimes it _poured_. What do you
think all the little Mikeys did at night when all the
ground was covered in water?

Also remember that your teachers at nursery
school tell you that these people lived in places
where it got very very cold at night. So all the
water on the ground was very very cold.

So, this time, for a change Mikey, when you
wake up try to have an answer to the question.

Where did all the little Mikeys of 2 or 3 or 4 or 5
million years ago rest their little heads at night?
