water off coasts is salty.

It's nothing to do with ingesting water.

The following factors are relevant:
(a) hominids are mammals -- with hot blood
designed for night activity;
(b) hominids are primates: mammals which
switched to day-time activity;
(c) hominids became terrestrial, and began
to sleep on the ground;
(d|) hominids compelled to sleep on cold
wet ground will suffer greatly, often to
the point of death -- especially in the
case of infants.
