but AFAIK, the holes in hominid skulls match those of leapord teeth.
Not lions.
In any case, I dont think stones were the only option. In the Savanna,
it'd be really useful to carry a stick to dig tubers like the Kalihari
Pygmi did. The instinctive response of a man with a stick on the part
of all predators seems to be fairly well known. You wouldnt think a
stick would do enuf damage to deter attack. But I know a standard
technique where a man stuck the *** of the stick in the dirt behind
him, holding up the point to impale the chest of a predator leaping at
him. I can see where even Lions would get the point. Leapords however,
only attacked from the rear.
A stick against lions? Not much use. The point here is that lions prey

on almost anything they please and nothing goes extinct thereby. Trying.
to argue that lions couldn't kill early hominids is setting up a straw
man for attack. Of course, lions preyed on hominids. This would not
prevent the spread of hominids.
Lions and hyenas would be very difficult predators to deal with. Until
the development of spears with stone points, lions would be nearly
impossible. Lion-caused casualties would just be one of the problems
that would have to be overcome.
Phil Aikley (sp) killed a leopard with his bare hands but he wasn't a
ninety-pound early hominid. And there was a hospital for him to go to
after.
