The newsgroups that died were those that were part of
communities that failed to guard their territory, letting it become
depleted, becoming desperate, drawing the attention of the net-loons
during the dry season. Possibly resulting in the decimation of the
whole newsgroup community in a predatory siege/massacre that may have
continued for days/weeks.
