when some change in their situation

What change in situation? Be specific.

There were dozens of possible changes that
could have left a hominid population unable
to cope with predation: drought, epidemics
of disease, internal strife, local crop failure,
warfare with other tribes, flooding, forest fire,
a change in local vegetation, volcanic eruption,
tsunami, inter-breeding leading to unsustainable
rate of genetic defects, occasionally geographic
changes such as sea-rises or falls, etc., etc.

A mainland hominid population would have
to be strong at all times to keep the predators
at bay -- by constant day-time patrolling of
the hinterland. But that strength would often
weaken for one reason or another.

The newsgroups that died were those that were part of
communities that failed to guard their territory, letting it become
depleted, becoming desperate, drawing the attention of the net-loons
during the dry season.

Nope. The species is full of non-viable
populations, which have no idea why
they exist, nor how to deal with any
survival issue. They can't tell their arse
from their elbow (neither of their own
nor of other species) so how could any
of them cope with opposition?
