But they're not obligate bipeds.

Don't be silly:
1) obligate biped??
- Lucy had curved phalanges = branch-hanging.
- It had a few KWing features.
2) exclusion?? why??

Obviously, Lucy was a bipedal wader-climber (arms overhead) in swamp forests
(where it was found), feeding partly on AHV, sedges etc.(cf.microwear,
calorie-poor diet, thick enamel, smaller front teeth, larger backteeth),
like lowland gorillas, but afarensis spent more time in the water & less on
the forest floor (cf.hotter+wetter Pliocene).

Why not inform a bit, eg, my 2002 paper with P-F.Puech & S.Munro
"Aquarboreal ancestors?" Trends in Ecology & Evolution 17:212-7. Just
google "aquarboreal". :-)
