a) He was comparing hominid vision to canids.
Agreed. Canid vision evolved for hunting
over tens of millions of years. IF hominids
had moved from a primate niche into one
resembling that of canids, their vision
would have converged.
By which logic I take it you would argue that cats' & dogs' vision is
convergent?
Cats and dogs do not occupy the same
niche. The proposed theory (of standard
PA) is the hominids moved into a quasi-
canid niche.
That's your straw man. It bears no relationship to any actual
paleoanthropologist's hypothesis.
Doesn't the phrase 'persistance hunting'
ring a bell? What exactly do dogs do?
But there are similarities
between dogs and cats -- as opposed to
primates, including humans. Dogs and
cats can see well at night and don't have
the primate colour discrimination.
Irrelevant.
You are emulating the McGinnian
death spiral.
Someone better write to those human hunter-gatherers who have been
hunting with it for thousands, if not millions, of years, & warn them.
They are (and were) much more intelligent
than you and were using traps, snares, pits
and the like -- rather than stupid running.
Not rather than, as well as. Perhaps sometimes instead of.
Sure. They could do EVERYTHING --
and they were great at each -- able to
out-compete the specialists. They
were part-time hunters who could use
traps, snares, pits, and run down prey
as well as dogs. That must be why
they had populations in the billions
all over Africa.
How does a hunter get a large mammal into a trap or pit?
Dig a bigger one? Or not bother in
the first place.
Paul.
