Carrying a club, when all adults around you
carry them too, knowing that if you drop yours
you are quite likely to suffer a fatal attack.
And doing this 24/7 -- keeping your club by
you while you sleep.
There should be nothing remarkable in this.
Adult males in countries where there is no
effective police force keep weapons to hand
at all times. Clubs were replaced by better
weapons (e.g. swords, daggers and later guns)
as they became available.
