"Chimpanzees are not only five-to-seven times stronger than humans
(eight-to-ten times stronger in their upper bodies alone), they also
have denser bones and thicker skin."
Of course, the range of upper-body strength among humans is
considerable. When someone says a chimpanzee is seven times stronger
than a human, do they mean a farm boy or a city boy?
But I certainly agree this is no "urban myth". It is surprising that
humans have become so physically weak, because one would think that
physical strength is strongly selected for. Possibly our relative
weakness is a consequence of something essential to human
intelligence, such as our long life span.
