Running does indeed result in higher bone density.

when you compare people like you sitting on a chair with athletes yes

not when you compare normal cursorials with erectus:

Erectus did not sit on a chair, Marc. They had an energetic lifestyle, far more
energetic than you.

Total and regional bone density in male runners, cyclists, and controls.
Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. 32(8):1373-1377, August 2000.
...
Conclusion: Running is associated with increased bone density, particularly in
the leg, whereas cycling is associated with a mild decrease in bone density in
the spine. In athletes who do both, running exerts a stronger influence than
cycling.

Do sporting activities convey benefits to bone mass throughout the skeleton?
Authors: Alan Nevill; Roger Holder; Arthur Stewart

pp. 645-650(6)

It is well known that sport and exercise play an important role in
stimulating site-specific bone mineral density (BMD). However, what is less
well understood is how these benefits dissipate throughout the body. Hence,
the aim of the present study was to compare the BMD (recorded at nine
sites throughout the skeleton) of 106 male athletes (from nine sports) with
that of 15 male non-exercising age-matched controls. ... However, evidence
that bone mass acquisition is not just site-specific comes from the results
of the rugby players, strength athletes, triathletes and racket players.
... These results suggest that sporting activities involving high impact,
physical contact and/or rotational forces or strains are likely to convey
significant benefits not only to the loaded sites, but also to other
unloaded peripheral and axial sites throughout the skeleton.

Mid-femur geometry and biomechanical properties in 15- to 18-yr-old
female athletes.

APPLIED SCIENCES Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. 34(4):673-681,
April 2002.
...
Conclusions: Running, a weight-bearing exercise, is associated with more
favorable geometric and biomechanical characteristics in relation to bone
strength, compared with the weight supported activities of swimming and
cycling. Differences may reflect skeletal adaptations to the specific
mechanical-loading patterns inherent in these sports.
