Controversial Grading Policy at HBCU in South Carolina

Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, enrolls approximately
3,000 students, more than 99 percent of whom are black. The institution
...has a dismally low black student graduation rate of 24.5 percent.

In an effort to boost student retention, President David Swinton
instituted a new policy called Success Equals Effort (SEE). Under the
SEE policy, 60 percent of a freshman student's grade is determined by
the *effort* the student puts into his or her work. Although the
formula for grading a student's effort is left to each department,
components of the grade include attendance, punctuality, prompt
completion of homework assignments, and class participation.

Only 40 percent of the student's grade is determined by academic
performance or the mastery of the subject material. Under this new
formula, a student who tries very hard but fails every test and
academic assignment would receive a grade of C. Under the old system,
this student would flunk out of college.

For sophomores at Benedict College, effort accounts for half of a
student's grade and academic performance for the other half...

Two teachers at Benedict College were fired recently because they
refused to base their grades on the effort of their students....
