The same way that Tolkien explained the existence of goblins and trolls:
Morgoth (Quenya, "The Dark Enemy") kidnapped men and elves and, by slow
torture over generations, twisted them in mind and body in a grotesque
parody of creation in order to create servants for his other evil deeds.
Hard core creationists will say that the extinction of other hominids is
"proof" that God is mightier than Satan.
