I think it has a lot to do with the American environment.

Both my parents are fluent in three languages. They also studied
another while in high school. I am fluent in only one but can
understand to varying degrees the other two. I can write with some
difficulty in one of them.

I overstated. There are Nusantao who are still nomadic like the Badjau
and Samal. They live in their boats and move from place to place with
the seasons. They do practice some agriculture but mostly live off the
sea or buy agricultural products.
