Re: Is there any modern work tracing the relationships between Jews
and Kazars?

Tim,

I can't think of any. The Kazars are one of these peoples who are kind
of a footnote in history like the Phrygians and Galatians or the Alans
and Vandals. They were a Turkic people, however, who ruled an empire
in the 8th century A.D. that stretched from the Caspian Sea into
present-day Hungary. They had some contacts with the Byzantine
Empire and one Byzantine Emperor married a Kazar princess. The upper
classes converted to Judaism and their descendents merged with the
Semitic Russian Jewish population. Some of them have emigrated to
Israel too. The lower classes merged with the Hungarian population
and their descendents became Christians, mostly Catholic Christians.
