Suppose I have a gene that predisposes me to a disease in the future,
say, schizophrenia. Doctors can start me on a specific diet early on,
that will help prevent that disease. Certain diseases are prevented by
not using a certain substance, while other diseases may be preventing
by using that exact same substance, say, folid acid. It's not that a
certain substance is always good or always bad: it depends on what
disease you are trying to prevent. So it is useful to know whether it
is positively helpful to avoid abstance, or whether it is positively
helpful to take a substance. If I had to wait until the disease
started, then it might be too late. I might be stuck with the disease
forever. Or maybe that gene could actually be turned off altogether.
