Incredibly, it may be true in this case. The whole Columbus / Pothorst /
Pining saga is a pyramid standing on its tip. Almost nothing you read on
the Internet about this is a primary source, with the result that Scolvus,
for example, has been claimed by the Danes, the Norwegians, the Poles, the
Portugese, the Catalans- all under different names that sound a little bit
like "Scolvus" or "Scolnus". Nearly all the prime (as opposed to primary)
sources date from the 16th century, and treat the various personalities
separately- Pothorst & Pining in Olaus Magnus' "Historia de Gentibus
Septentrionallibus" and a French map based on his "Carta Marina"; Scolvus
in a note on the Gemma Frisius /Mercator globe of the 1530s; Corte Real in
Gaspar Fructuoso's "Saudades da Terra".The Scolvus note specifically
mentions 1476, but the apparent joint voyage of Pothorst, Pining and Corte
Real at the direction of the King of Portugal is dated principally by the
granting of a mid-Atlantic base on Terceira to the latter in 1474, on the
assumption that this was after the route to the region of codfish via
Iceland had been proved. Sofus Larsen's “The Discovery of North America
Twenty years Before Columbus” (1925) set out the basic theory, based on the
above and other evidence, but Scolvus in particular has proved to be a
fruitful source for kookish speculation.
