Padraic,
had you known about the politics behind the 'early' maps up to 1650 you
wouldn't have had to ask.
First of all there were parts which deliberately was changed when a map was
edited. Contrary to what was on the seacharts that in many cases wasn't.
That you can see an example of in
Mercator/Janssonius 1648 map.
That bloob IS Alaska.
What you probably didn't know, is that the Norse Greenlanders made it all
way to Alaska. That I know. No matter that I will not deliver my proof here.
What I don't know is if they 'only' crossed southward on land or if the
documentary which was shown on one of the pay-channels earlier this year
where the Norse Greenlanders were supposed to have had a hunting place on
shore of Gulf of Alaska.(Don't remember the Bay's name for the moment).
Anyhow the reason why it's shown as a bloob and not as a part of the other
land was political.
As you might have seen if you read the last days ref. in full, that's also
indicated in English letters from the 16th century.
