I have used modern planes, medieval planes, old planes
modeled on ancient planes, and planes of my own invention.

If you want to know the truth there is very little difference
as regards period and much more difference as regards function.

I can buy or make a modern plane with a bronze or damascus blade adjusted
with a wooden wedge that it would be very hard to distinguish from a
scandinavian, old english, germanic, celtic, roman, greek or egyptian
plane.

There is no great change or advancement in medieval planes and
modern planes with screw adjustments and metal soles are disdained
by many collectors who prefer less metal and more wood.

I'm actually thinking of making a few with mahogany obsidian blades
using a piece of lignum vitae I have been letting cure since the mid
seventies.
