Ultimately, yes, but French is the immediate source. OE was "mere".

Couldn't say about those. Apparently loch is genuine Celtic, but I don't
know about other Germanic words of this group. I would just look in
Pokorny or Buck, but don't have them here. Maybe Miguel will happen
along...
The fact about "lake" just stuck in my mind several years ago when I
looked at the non-Germanic items on the Swadesh list: "lake", "forest",
"river", "mountain" (not to mention "flower" and "fruit") are surprising
to find as borrowings.
