Alan:
FWIW, all this was Jean Monnet's idea; he proposed a Franco-British
Union in June, 1940, building on the 1814 proposal of Claude Henri de
Rouvray, Comte de Saint-Simon, and Victor Hugo's 1849 "United States
of Europe".
After the Fall of France he went to the U.S. to buy arms for the
combined effort of Britain and Free France, remembering the failure
of un-coordinated efforts to oppose Germany, and more convinced than
ever of the value of a formal supra-national co-ordinating body.
Monnet later was a "Founding Father" of the European Union
(originally between France and Germany, not Britain).

I'd argue that the "United Nations" idea, as conceived by
Churchill and Roosevelt, was actually carried out by NATO,
because once the USSR started reflexively vetoing peace
arrangements at the UN, the UN became a lost cause, in
the eyes of the Americans.
So, I'd argue that NATO should really be called the United Nations,
especially as it doesn't have any French in it, except for the French
Canadians whose home territory was once governed by l'Union Nationale,
so they're cool with that.
N'est pas?
