Since Scandinavia was a part of the Catholic world in the Middle Ages, the
prayer Ave Maria *must* have been known. It's in the Bible after all. No one
sensible could have claimed that it was not known in medieval Scandinavia
(and no sensible person would imply that anyone had claimed that). As you
say, David, it must be the abbreviation AVM that would be considered
unusual, especially in a runic inscription, and especially in one purporting
to come from medieval Minnesota.
