Many events in the Bible are believed or known to be historical. Same
thing with the Quran, Homer's literature, etc., etc.
In almost every region, mythological literature is used to decipher
history.

Who says nobody has every witnessed a current event being transformed
into a myth? What about the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, the
cargo cults, or any modern or historical cult figure, to give a few
examples.
Look at the founder of the Bahai faith, who is generally accepted as an
historical figure. All the claimed miraculous events of his life have
become part of myth.
Another example is the great typhoon that destroyed the Mongol fleet
off Japan and was attributed to the Kami, the divine forces of nature.
As for a plausible mechanism, one doesn't even have to have much of an
imagination to figure out how this could happen.
