I have managed to get a reply from Dr Joanne Fletcher about the
mommies in the tomb of Amenhotep II.

Quote:
Of the three mummies, one had a shaven head, the second with a
sidelock had darkish brown hair with a few red tones, whilst the long
haired 'Elder Woman' had some red tones in her hair which may be a
result of henna, as found on other mummies examined, although dye
analysis would have to be carried out. It may be that some burials
have red hair as a result of the burial conditions (though this
effect is often overstated, particularly in Egyptian mummies), but
surprisingly little rigorous scientific research has been focussed in
this area. I hope that this information is helpful.
End quote.

This struck me as odd, as the Times photo was of a complete redhead.
However, I have since noticed that other photos show the hair colour
as brown - which just goes to show that you shouldn't believe all you
read in the papers.

Apparently, no hair samples were taken for further research. Since Dr
Fletcher is a specialist in Egyptian wigs, I find her lack of interest
and research in this aspect of the mummies disappointing to say the
least.

Ralph Ellis
